The image in alternative forms: exploring a sustainable arts practice beyond the gallery

Fern Thomas - 3Fern will use this research period to further explore recent shifts in her practice where the focus of her work increasingly exists outside of the gallery space.

Undertaking research into spoken word, text and ‘the event’ centered around a socially engaged practice, Fern will explore existing models that operate outside of the gallery context, heavily informed by her recent MA in Social Sculpture, which will help shape a new research territory within her practice.

This Creative Wales Award will allow for the development of new skills such as building on voice work and spoken word as well as the writing process behind this.

Critically the award will allow for a reflection into Fern’s practice to date, mapping key areas of enquiry setting a new focus for her future practice.

This award period will explore the role of the image in alternative forms and also question how artists in Wales can create a sustainable arts practice beyond the dependency on the gallery system.
