Criw Cymru

Criw Cymru is a project developed by Wales Millennium Centre, the national performing arts centre for Wales, in partnership with other venues and organisations throughout Wales.

Dates: June 2009 - present

The Criw

Since June 2009 Criw Cymru has been giving hip hop workshops in locations across Wales for young people aged 11-18, helping to develop dance skills, promote health and nutrition, and build their self esteem. By giving them access to some of the very best hip hop tutors in the UK today, and even arranging for them to meet former Olympians, it is hoped that it will inspire children from many Welsh communities to aim high and to be the very best they can.

Here they form an all-Wales ‘crew’, honing their hip hop skills in the Centre’s world-class rehearsal and performance spaces, and learning how to create a theatrical piece out of the individual strengths they bring to the group. Forming lasting friendships that span geographic and social divides is a key outcome of the project. As is the ambition that Criw Cymru are of a standard to perform at Olympic Live Sites in 2012.

The aim of Criw Cymru is primarily to develop the urban arts skills and knowledge of the young people of Wales. Participants are taught about maintaining their health through dance and discuss other fundamental benefits such as good nutrition. The overall aim is to promote self esteem and inspire ambition and self-belief, providing the participants with the tools for them to be the best they can be. Through participation the project also hopes to foster strong, meaningful and lasting friendships which will span Wales.
